Neubrandenburg Travel Guide
The New Gate dates from the 15th century and its
three somewhat older, red brick companions lent
Neubrandenburg its sobriquet of "The City of Four
Gates". The four ornate edifices are unique examples
of North German Gothic brick architecture and are
notable in Europe. They represent part of a
mediaeval fortification consisting of well preserved
city walls, turrets, watchtowers, moats and stately
old oaks. For many centuries this 2300 metre long
stronghold embraced the urban community which was
founded in 1248 by Herbord von Raven. Legend has it
that the image of an Italian city persisted in his
mind's eye as he gave instructions for his plan of a
circular layout with a near symmetrical grid of
streets. This basic structure has been preserved to
this day and only during the last three decades has
Neubrandenburg outgrown this nucleus of a city. Now
there are new housing estates in the hills around
the city and the number of residents has increased
sharply.
From a cultural point of view, Neubrandenburg has
a lot to offer. Firstly, there is St. Mary's church.
In addition to the four gates, St. Mary's church
with its high spire is the most visible symbol of
Neubrandenburg for miles around. It was
ceremoniously consecrated in 1298. As a result of
damage caused by wars and the passage of time, the
Neustrelitz court architect, Friedrich Wilhelm
Büttel, a pupil of the famous architect Schinkel,
restored the church in neo-Gothic style in the
middle of the 19th century.
Also the Second World War left its traces on this
important historical monument. Only the outer walls
and parts of the tower remained undamaged.
In 1996 the announcement of an international
architectural competition was made, which planned to
convert St. Mary's church into a concert hall. The
winning plan of an architect from Helsinki was
implemented. The concert church of Neubrandenburg
was opened ceremoniously in July 2001. It is the
home of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Famous national and international artists perform
here. The city also supports its other cultural
institutions such as the regional library, regional
museum, art collection and congress center. It is
also well worth attending the performances given by
the Theater and Orchestra GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz.
The Neubrandenburg Theater is the oldest in
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Sport is also very important in the city besides
culture. Olympic, world and European champions come
from Neubrandenburg and have carried the name of
their city to all corners of the earth. These
include Astrid Kumbernuss, Franka Dietzsch, Andreas
Dittmer, Thomas Zereske, Anja Dittmer and Stefan
Uteß. Leisure time and popular sport also has its
permanent place in Neubrandenburg. Over ten thousand
adults, children and youth go in for sport at 65
sports clubs.
Trollenhagen Airport is significant for the
development of Neubrandenburg as a major hub of the
region with a number of regional authorities. It is
only ten minutes by car from the city center. The
city has invested in large projects as new
industrial locations on about 200 hectares so that
the citizens of Neubrandenburg can also find work
locally. Fortunately, these areas are " almost fully
taken".
Another advantage of Neubrandenburg is also its
close proximity to Lake Tollense. The lake, which is
eleven kilometers long and almost three kilometers
wide, is nestled in an idyllic forest and hilly
countryside. A lot of things have taken place on the
lake where Theodor Fontäne would have had his
pleasure. The poet repeatedly sought rest and
relaxation on its shores. The restructured swimming
areas attract swimmers and strollers alike. The
37-kilometer long cycling track around Lake Tollense
is particularly popular with natives and guests,
too. A passenger boat cruises over its waves in the
summer. But you can also see the canoeists of the
sports club training here or oarsman and surfers,
who look for sporting relaxation in their leisure
time.
